FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a mattress arrangement, such as a bed arrangement, which has an adjustable firmness. It also refers to a bagged spring mattress usable in such a mattress arrangement and a method for controlling such a mattress arrangement. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] In mattress arrangements, such as in a bedding or other seating or furniture arrangement, a support is provided to act on the weight or part of the weight of a user, where the bed distributes the weight of the user's body part of a device surface. Depending on how the bed distributes the user's weight, the bed will appear as soft or firm. The degree of firmness of such a bed is dependent on the properties of the elastic elements, such as the spring constant and how the elastic members were mounted on the bed, such as the degree of grip or pre-tensioning. In this way, the firmness of the bed is usually defined in the manufacture of the device.
[0003] However, different people desire and demand different firmness. In addition, different body parts may require different firmness.
[0004] It is known to provide bedding with variable firmness. By inducing deformation of the elastic members in different degrees, the firmness of the device is adjustable. The deformation member has the ability to deform the elastic member regardless of the deformation of the elastic member induced by the being. This means that the firmness of the bed is adjustable during startup, according to the user's wishes. It is also possible to compensate for the firmness of the device for possible changes in the elastic properties of the elastic arrangement over time. Such known solutions are, for example, disclosed in documents No. EP 2 245 967 and WO 2009/120270.
[0005] Additionally, it is known to provide a variation in firmness of a mattress by arranging helical springs on support plates that have variable height. The height of the support plates can be controlled by rotating elements arranged under the support plates and which have an axis of rotation outside the center. Through this, through the rotation of the rotating elements, the plates assume different height positions. Such means of adjusting firmness, for example, discussed in documents No. 3 340 548 and US 2011/0258772. It is also known to use a similar arrangement with support plates having variable height where the height of the support plates can be controlled by displacement members in the form of linear motors, jacks and other types of lifting mechanism. Such means of adjusting firmness are, for example, discussed in documents No. AU 55 13 00, US 4 222 137, US 2006/0253994, WO 99/65366 and EP 2 245 967.
[0006] However, common problems with these previously known bedding arrangements with varying firmness are that they are relatively complex, heavy and costly to produce. In addition, these known bedding arrangements are also often relatively difficult and burly to use. In addition, even if these known bedding arrangements provide a degree of adjustability, this is often inappropriate for the user's needs.
[0007] Another approach is present in document No. US 8 176 589, by the same depositor as in this application, in which the bed has a variable width and the mattress is arranged to be expanded / contracted together with the expansion / contraction of the frame from the bed. However, a significant disadvantage of this approach is that the size of the bed varies significantly.
[0008] It is, therefore, still a necessity for a mattress arrangement and in particular a bed arrangement, with adjustable firmness that alleviates the problems discussed above. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0009] It is, therefore, an objective of the present invention to at least partially overcome these problems and to provide an improved mattress arrangement.
[0010] These and other objectives that will be apparent below are achieved by a mattress arrangement, a bagged spring mattress and a method for controlling a mattress arrangement, in accordance with the attached claims.
[0011] According to a first aspect of the invention a mattress arrangement is provided, such as a bed arrangement, which comprises:
[0012] an upper mattress;
[0013] a lower mattress which is disposed under said upper mattress;
[0014] a support layer disposed between the upper mattress and the lower mattress, to partially support the upper mattress;
[0015] in which at least one side of the lower mattress is movable in relation to an opposite side of the lower mattress, the lower mattress being thus expandable to an expanded state, which has a lower and compressible firmness to a contracted state, that has a superior firmness; and
[0016] in which said support layer is arranged in superposition to said at least one movable side of the lower mattress, which thus forms at least one compartment under the upper mattress, the said (s) ) compartment (s) is partially empty when the lower mattress is in the contracted state and at least partially full when the lower mattress is in the expanded state.
[0017] The mattress arrangement can be a bed arrangement, but other types of seating or furniture arrangement are also viable. In particular, the mattress arrangement comprises a mattress, for example, in the form of a bed mattress, a pillow or the like, to accommodate a user's weight. Such mattresses can, for example, be used in seats for all types of vehicles, upholstered furniture, bedding and the like.
[0018] The support layer can be connected to a bed frame or similar, on which the bottom mattress rests. However, the support layer can also be connected to side supports that are connected to a bottom mattress base, bed base, or the like. The support layer can also be connected to a frame arranged between the upper and lower balls, such as a frame that surrounds the perimeter of the lower side of the upper mattress. In this case, the support layer can form an integral part with the upper or lower mattress.
[0019] Additional mattresses, lining layers, etc., can also be provided. In addition, the entire mattress arrangement can also be attached to a cover fabric.
[0020] The support layer is preferably inelastic and can be formed as a rigid structure, such as a plate, a grid, bars, etc. It can also be formed by malleable / flexible and preferably non-elastic elements, such as a fabric, flexible strips, cables, or the like. However, the support layer can also be formed by flexible / flexible and elastic elements, such as fabric, strips, cables or similar made and elastic material.
[0021] The support layer is arranged to cover the movable end (s) of the lower mattress and to have an extension so that it provides support for the upper layer over the empty space (s) ( s) formed when the lower mattress is compressed to the contracted state. However, the support layer only partially supports the upper mattress, which means that the support layer must not cover and support the entire lower surface of the upper mattress. A larger part of the lower surface of the upper mattress remains unsupported by the support layer and that part of the upper mattress is instead supported directly by the lower mattress. In this way, the support layer provides support only for a limited part of the upper mattress, or for limited parts, in the event that several different areas are to be supported. Consequently, the support layer (s) preferably each have a horizontal dimension that is equal, or almost equal, to the horizontal dimension of the upper mattress in one direction, which corresponds to a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the lower mattress is contracted, but being a horizontal dimension much smaller than the horizontal dimension of the upper mattress in another direction, which corresponds to the direction in which the lower mattress is contracted. Preferably, the horizontal extension of the support layer in this last direction is in the range of 5 to 40% of the corresponding dimension of the upper mattress and preferably in the range of 10 to 30%.
[0022] The contraction of the lower mattress preferably occurs in the direction of the length of the mattress, but may alternatively or additionally occur in the direction of the width.
[0023] In positions where the upper surface is not supported by the support layer, the upper mattress is supported by the lower mattress. When the firmness of the lower mattress decreases, that is, when it is expanded, this allows the upper mattress to sink more easily into the lower mattress, thereby increasing the softness of the bed / seat. When the firmness of the lower mattress is increased, that is, when it is contracted, this provides increased resistance for the upper mattress to sink into the lower mattress, which results in a firmer mattress arrangement.
[0024] Since the support layer is overlapped with at least one movable side of the lower mattress, which thus forms at least one compartment under the upper mattress, the movable side is free to move into and out of that compartment. Consequently, the compartment is at least partially empty when the lower mattress is in the contracted state and at least partially filled when the lower mattress is in the expanded state.
[0025] The experience of sleeping / sitting / resting and what is considered comfortable or does not vary much from person to person. In addition, a user may often find it more comfortable to have a softer mattress when using a lying position, such as prone, that is, in a prone position, or on the side, than when resting in other sleeping positions, such as as in the back, that is, in the supine position. The present invention provides an efficient yet relatively simple and cost-effective way of varying the properties of the mattress depending on the wishes of the user and, for example, based on the choice of the lying position. It was found that this greatly improves the sleep and rest experience, which provides better quality of rest and sleep. Improved sleep and rest also improves the user's health and generally leads to an improved quality of life.
[0026] Prior to the present invention, mattresses and seats / beds with adjustable properties were known to be complex, heavy and costly as well as difficult and burly to use. In contrast, the present invention providing a mattress arrangement, such as a bed arrangement, with adjustable properties that weigh very little, is relatively simple and cost-efficient to produce, which is easy to operate for the user. The mattress arrangement also serves very well for automated or semi-automated manufacturing.
[0027] Still further, the mattress arrangement of the present invention provides fixed external dimensions, since the contraction of the lower mattress occurs under the upper mattress and can easily be hidden from the user. In this way, the overall size and appearance of the mattress arrangement remains the same, regardless of the firmness settings used.
[0028] It was found that by this variation in the extension of the lower mattress, a wide range of different definitions of firmness for the mattress arrangement can be obtained. Firmness is also controllable in a precise and predictable way.
[0029] The part of the mattress arrangement where the upper mattress covers the support layer maintains firmness at all times. However, preferably the support layer is arranged in a part of the mattress arrangement that is designed to carry only a low or moderate one, such as at the foot end of the mattress arrangement. In this area, there is usually no need for firmness adjustments. Additionally, in a bed, this part of the mattress arrangement is often used for sitting and the increased stability provided by the support layer improves sitting comfort. Additionally or alternatively, the support layer can be arranged along the long sides of the bedding. Again, this would not impair sleeping comfort, as the outer edges are not normally used during sleep. Otherwise, increased stability in the direction of the edges can often be beneficial, as it again improves comfort when sitting on the side of the mattress arrangement and also decreases the risk of accidentally falling out of bed. The arrangement of the support layer along one or both of the long sides of the mattress arrangement would also be advantageous when the mattress arrangement is used in sofas, desks and the like. In addition, if the backing layer is made of a somewhat elastic material, the backing layer itself will provide some resilience.
[0030] Preferably, the lower mattress has a variable length in at least one direction of the mattress length. Additionally, it is preferred that at least one side disposed at one end of the foot of the lower mattress is movable in relation to a side disposed at a head end of the lower mattress. In that case, the side arranged on the head end of the lower mattress is preferably fixed and preferably in a position that corresponds to the side of the upper mattress.
[0031] Preferably, the lower mattress in its expanded state has external dimensions that correspond to the external dimensions of the upper mattress. Through this, the lower mattress is used to its maximum and at the same time, the total horizontal dimensions of the mattress are governed only by the size of the upper mattress.
[0032] The lower mattress can additionally assume at least one and preferably a plurality of intermediate states, between the expanded state and the contracted state. In a preferred embodiment, the lower mattress is continuously controllable to be defined in any intermediate state between the expanded state and the contracted state.
[0033] The upper mattress can be of different types, such as having inflatable elements, which comprise resilient foam elements, resilient rubber and the like. However, preferably the upper mattress comprises a plurality of coil springs and preferably coil springs arranged individually in separate recesses of a cover material, to define a pocket spring mattress. The top mattress can be of any thickness. The upper mattress may in some embodiments be relatively thin, such as being only a few centimeters thick. However, in other embodiments, the upper mattress can be relatively thick, such as having a thickness that exceeds one decimeter. In some embodiments, the upper mattress may be essentially the same thickness as the lower mattress. However, in other embodiments, the upper mattress may have a thickness that is lower or much less than the lower mattress.
[0034] The lower mattress can also be of different types. The bottom mattress can be the same type as the top mattress, or a different type.
[0035] Preferably, the lower mattress is a pocket spring mattress, which comprises a plurality of helical springs arranged in recesses. More preferably, the bagged spring mattress comprises a plurality of parallel filaments interconnected side by side, with each filament comprising a plurality of continuous carcasses and each carcass comprising a helical spring, in which the expansion of the mattress to the expanded state occurs in a pile. minus one of a direction that is parallel to the filaments and a direction that is perpendicular to the filaments. Mattresses of these types are known for themselves. A type of mattress that is suitable for use in connection with the present invention is that disclosed in document No. US 8 176 589, by the same depositor, which refers to a bagged spring mattress in which a plurality of stretch openings are formed in the roofing material that forms the recesses, which allows the filaments to be separated from each other. This document is hereby incorporated by reference. Another type of mattress that is also suitable for use in connection with the present invention is that disclosed in document No. US 7 048 263, also at least depositor, which refers to a bagged spring mattress in which a separation distance is formed between adjacent springs / recesses within each filament, which allows the mattress to be expanded and contracted in the direction of the filaments. This document is hereby incorporated by reference. Yet another example of a type of mattress that is suitable for use in connection with the present invention is that disclosed in document No. US 2007/124865, also at least depositor, which refers to a bagged spring mattress in which a distance of separation is formed between adjacent springs / recesses within each filament and in which a slit opening is provided within each separation, which further enhances the mattress's ability to expand and contract in the direction of the filaments. This document is hereby incorporated by reference.
[0036] The lower mattress preferably additionally comprises at least one elastic element that extends between said moving side and said opposite side of the lower mattress, wherein the at least one elastic element is arranged to provide a contraction force for bring the lower mattress to the contracted state. Hereby, the lower mattress will return to a contracted state when no outside force is applied. This simplifies the operation of the mattress. In addition, this ensures that the spring distribution in the lower mattress remains uniform also in each intermediate state, between the expanded state and the contracted state. The elastic element can, for example, be a strip, filament, cable or the like of an elastic material. Preferably, a plurality of elastic elements are provided, which are distributed on or within the lower mattress. Additionally, it is preferred that each elastic element is connected to the lower mattress at a plurality of distributed connection points. In the case of a bagged spring mattress, it is preferable that each elastic element is connected to a plurality of recesses and preferably to each recess with which it is in contact.
[0037] The elastic element (s) can be arranged on the top surface of the bottom mattress, on the bottom surface of the bottom mattress, on one or several sides of the bottom mattress, integrated within the bottom mattress, or any combination thereof. In a bagged spring mattress, at least some of the elastic elements may extend between adjacent rows / filaments of pocket springs.
[0038] The elastic elements discussed above are arranged on or integrated into the lower mattress and are used to provide a contraction of the mattress, to bring it into the contracted state. Thus, for the operation of such a mattress, an opposing force is provided, for example, by a disposition to push or pull, to expand the mattress and to bring the mattress into an expanded state, or an intermediate state between the contracted state and the state expanded. Releasing the opposite force, the lower mattress is automatically contracted and brought back to a contracted state, which is the state of rest or pattern.
[0039] However, alternatively resilient elements, such as springs, may instead be arranged to automatically bring the lower mattress to an expanded state, in which case the opposite force must instead be provided to bring the lower mattress to a more contracted state. and by which a release of the opposite force instead brings the lower mattress back to an expanded state of rest or pattern.
[0040] Additionally, the mattress arrangement preferably comprises a pull or push arrangement connected to at least one movable side, to provide a pulling or pushing force to bring the lower mattress into the expanded state. The same or other arrangement for pushing or pulling can also be used to bring the lower mattress into the contracted state, in case it is not solved automatically, for example, by means of the elastic elements discussed above. The pull or push arrangement can be one or more strings, filaments or the like connected to one side of the lower mattress or inside the lower mattress. Such an arrangement is quite cost-effective and is particularly suitable for manual operation. The strings / filaments can, for example, be locked in a suitable pulled position by a locking arrangement, tied together, or secured in any other way. However, the strings / filaments can also be operated by an electric motor or similar. In addition, the movable side of the lower mattress can be connected to a pulling or pushing element, which can be moved automatically, by an electric motor or similar, or manually, by a screw arrangement or similar. For example, a lead screw or translation screw can be used. A handle, wheel or any other type of handle can then be turned manually, which in this way turns the screw, which results in a corresponding displacement of the rigid element to pull.
[0041] The mattress arrangement additionally comprises a frame arranged to at least partially accommodate the lower mattress, on which the support layer is connected to the frame. The frame can also be optionally arranged to accommodate, partially or totally, the upper mattress. The frame is preferably relatively rigid and can, for example, be made of wood, plastic or metal.
[0042] According to another aspect of the invention, a bagged spring mattress is provided which comprises a plurality of parallel filaments interconnected side by side, each filament comprising a plurality of continuous carcasses and each carcass comprising a helical spring, wherein the mattress additionally comprises at least one elastic element which extends between two opposite sides of the mattress, said at least one elastic element being arranged to provide a contraction force to bring said opposite sides towards each other.
[0043] By means of this additional aspect of the invention, similar objectives and advantages as discussed above in relation to the first aspect of the invention are obtainable.
[0044] The bagged spring mattress preferably comprises a plurality of parallel elastic elements provided, said elastic elements being separated from each other and distributed over a length or width of the bagged spring mattress.
[0045] In accordance with yet another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for adapting the firmness of a mattress arrangement, which comprises the steps:
[0046] provide a top mattress;
[0047] providing a lower mattress which is disposed under said upper mattress, wherein at least one side of the lower mattress is movable in relation to an opposite side of the lower mattress, the lower mattress being thereby expandable to an expanded state , which has a lower and compressible firmness to a contracted state, which has a higher firmness;
[0048] providing a support layer disposed between the upper mattress and the lower mattress and in overlap with said at least one movable side of the lower mattress, to partially support the upper mattress; and
[0049] control the firmness of the mattress by moving said at least one movable side.
[0050] By means of this additional aspect of the invention, similar objectives and advantages as discussed above in relation to the first aspect of the invention are obtainable. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0064] In the following, the invention will be exemplified by means of bedding. However, it should be recognized by the converse reader that the principles and functions can also be used in other types of mattress arrangements that use mattresses, for example, in the form of a bed mattress, a pillow or the like, such as seats for all types of vehicles, upholstered furniture and the like. Accordingly, when reference is made after a bed or bedding, it should be understood that this can also be used in other types of mattress arrangements and in particular other types of furniture layouts.
[0065] A bed arrangement 1 that has adjustable firmness according to a first embodiment of the invention is shown schematically in Figure 1a. The bedding is attached to a cover 2, but in a section cut out in the middle of the interior of the bedding it is visible. The bedding comprises an upper mattress 3, a lower mattress 4 and a frame 5. An additional layer of liner 7 or similar can be provided between the upper and lower mattresses.
[0066] In the cross-sectional views of Figures 1b and 1c, a support layer 6 is further illustrated, partially providing a support for the upper mattress at one end of the bedding, such as the end of the foot. The support layer can be connected to a bed frame or similar, on which the bottom mattress rests. However, as will be explained further below, the support layer can also be connected to side supports that are connected to a bottom mattress base, a bed base, or the like. The support layer can also be connected to a frame arranged between the upper and lower balls, such as a frame that surrounds the perimeter of the lower side of the upper mattress. In this case, the support layer can form an integral part with the upper or lower mattress.
[0067] The support layer 6 is preferably inelastic and can be formed as a rigid structure, such as a plate, a grid, bars etc. It can also be formed by malleable / flexible and preferably non-elastic elements, such as fabric, flexible bands, cords, or the like. In the embodiment of Figure 1, a plate-like structure is used. However, elastic elements can also be used to form the support layer.
[0068] The support layer is arranged to cover the movable end (s) of the lower mattress and to have an extension so that it provides support for the upper layer over the empty space (s) ( s) formed when the lower mattress is compressed to the contracted state. The backing layer has a width dimension that is equal to, or almost equal to, the width dimension of the upper mattress and a length dimension that is much less than the length dimension of the upper mattress.
[0069] The lower mattress 4 has a movable end 41 disposed under the support layer 6 and the opposite end 42 is fixed and aligned with the corresponding end of the upper mattress 3.
[0070] The support layer forms a compartment under the upper mattress to receive the movable side 41 of the lower mattress, in which the lower mattress is free to move. Consequently, in an expanded state, which provides lower firmness, the compartment is filled by the lower mattress, as shown in Figure 1b, while in a contracted state, it provides greater firmness, the compartment is at least partially empty, as shown in Figure 1c.
[0071] The support layer can be kept in position in several ways, as will be exemplified below.
[0072] In one embodiment, shown in an exploded view in Figure 2, the bed frame 5 is arranged to extend upwards on the sides of the lower mattress 4, at least at one end of the mattress. This end is preferably the end of the foot of the bedding. The support layer can be connected to the bed frame by means of nails, screws, adhesive or any other suitable fastener, which in this way provides a fixed support for that part of the upper mattress 3 and allows the lower mattress to move in and out outside the compartment formed by it under the upper mattress.
[0073] In another embodiment, illustrated in Figure 3, the support layer is connected or integrated with support sides 61, such as side walls, poles or the like. These can be connected to a frame 5 'arranged under the lower mattress.
[0074] In another modality, illustrated in Figure 4, the support layer is connected to a bed frame, in the same way as in the modality discussed in relation to Figure 2. In this modality, the support layer 6 'is formed of elements malleable / flexible and preferably non-elastic, flexible bands, cords, or the like. Alternatively, a flexible or similar fabric can be used instead.
[0075] Additionally, the support layer can be connected to a support structure arranged entirely between the upper mattress 3 and the lower mattress 4. Such an embodiment is illustrated in Figure 12. In the present document, the support layer is connected to a frame rigid support frame 62, arranged around the perimeter of the upper mattress. The backing layer can, as in the previous examples, be a rigid plate, but it can alternatively be a flexible fabric, flexible strips or the like.
[0076] The upper mattress can be of different types, such as an inflatable element (s), a resilient foam element (s), a resilient rubber element and the like. However, preferably the upper mattress comprises a plurality of coil springs and preferably coil springs arranged individually in separate recesses of a cover material, to define a pocket spring mattress. The lower mattress can also be of different types. The bottom mattress can be the same type as the top mattress, or a different type.
[0077] Preferably, the lower mattress is a pocket spring mattress, which comprises a plurality of helical springs arranged in recesses. Each filament is preferably formed by continuous cover material and the separation between adjacent recesses that are formed by lateral separation joints. These separation joints, as well as longitudinal joints, can be formed through any form of adhesive bonding, welding, stapling, sewing, or any combination thereof. In a preferred embodiment, solder is used. Coil springs of many different sizes can be used in conjunction with the present invention and in principle any desired spring size, large or small, can be used. Preferably, however, helical springs have a diameter in the range of 2 to 10 cm and preferably in the range of 4 to 8 cm, such as 6 cm. In addition, helical springs are preferably manufactured from helically wound yarns. The springs preferably comprise at least three turns and preferably less than 10 turns. Furthermore, they are advantageously made of spiral wire with a thickness in the range of 0.5 to 3.0 mm, preferably a thickness of wire in the range of 1.25 to 2.50 mm. Preferably the springs are slightly reel-shaped, that is, with smaller turns at the top and bottom. Mattresses of these types are known for themselves.
[0078] A type of mattress that is suitable for use as the lower mattress is that disclosed in document No. US 8 176 589, by the same depositor, said document incorporated by means of this as a reference in its entirety. Such a mattress is illustrated in Figures 5a and 5b. This bagged spring mattress comprises recesses 51 arranged in filaments 52. In each recess there is a helical spring. Each filament is made of a continuous covering material and the recesses are formed by separation joints 53, for example, formed by welding. The filaments are connected to each other in parallel in a side-by-side arrangement, by connections 55. These connections can be formed by adhesive, but can alternatively be affected by welding, Velcro or similar. In addition, the recesses are provided with a plurality of stretch openings 54, which provides a mesh-like surface structure. This allows the filaments to be separated from each other.
[0079] Another type of mattress that is suitable for use as the lower mattress is the one disclosed in document US 7 048 263, also by the same depositor, and said document is also incorporated by reference in its entirety. Such a mattress is illustrated in Figure 6. This mattress has the same general structure as in the previous example, with helical springs being arranged in recesses 51, which forms filaments 52 that are connected to each other in parallel. However, in this modality an increased separation distance between the recesses / springs in each filament is provided. This can be done by providing two spaced apart joints 53 ', or alternatively using wide or similarly spaced joints. Through this, a separation distance between adjacent springs / recesses within each filament, which allows the mattress to be expanded and contracted in the direction of the filaments.
[0080] Yet another type of mattress that is suitable for use as the lower mattress is the one disclosed in document US 2007/24865, also by the same depositor, and said document is also incorporated by reference in its entirety. Such a mattress is illustrated in Figure 7. This mattress has the same general structure as in the previous example, with helical springs being arranged in recesses 51, which forms filaments 52 that are connected to each other in parallel. Additionally, an increased separation distance is provided between the recesses / springs in each filament, effected by providing two spaced separation joints 53 'or similar. To further increase the flexibility of the filaments, slit openings 56 are provided between recesses and between the separation joints 53 '. Slit openings are preferably attached within the material, without any open ends. Figure 7b illustrates this mattress in a contracted state, while Figure 7c illustrates the same mattress in an expanded state.
[0081] The lower mattress preferably additionally comprises at least one elastic element that extends between said moving side and said opposite side of the lower mattress, wherein the at least one elastic element is arranged to provide a contraction force for bring the lower mattress to the contracted state. Hereby, the lower mattress will return to a contracted state when no outside force is applied. This simplifies the operation of the mattress and also ensures that the distribution of springs in the lower mattress remains uniform also throughout the intermediate state, between the expanded state and the contracted state. Specifically, such elastic elements can be combined with any types of bagged spring mattress discussed above in relation to Figures 5 to 7.
[0082] In Figure 8, some alternative ways of providing such elastic elements 57 are illustrated.
[0083] In Figure 8a, a bagged spring mattress is illustrated in which elastic elements 57 are arranged on the top and bottom of the bottom mattress. In the illustrated example, elastic elements are arranged both on the top and bottom of the lower mattress, but alternatively elastic elements can be arranged only on the top or only on the bottom. In addition, the elastic elements are arranged here in line with the filaments. However, alternatively or in addition, elastic elements can also be arranged perpendicular to the direction of the filament. Additionally, in this example, elastic elements are arranged along each filament, but less elastic elements can also be used. The elastic elements are preferably connected to the filaments in a plurality of positions, as well as to any recess with which they make contact.
[0084] Alternatively or in addition, the elastic elements 57 can be arranged on the sides of the mattress and between the filaments. Such a modality is illustrated in Figure 8b. In this modality, elastic elements are provided between each pair of filaments. Again, less elastic elements can be used and an example of such an embodiment is illustrated in Figure 8c.
[0085] In the modalities illustrated in Figures 8-c, the elastic elements 57 are arranged in parallel with the filaments of the mattress. However, contraction and expansion of the mattress can, as already discussed, occur in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the filament. In such a mattress, the elastic elements can instead be arranged with an orientation perpendicular to the direction of the filament. Such a modality is illustrated in Figure 8d.
[0086] In the modalities discussed with reference to Figures 8a-d, the elastic elements are arranged to exert a force to bring the mattress into a contracted state. However, the elastic elements can instead be arranged to exert a force to bring the mattress to an expanded state. Such a modality is illustrated in Figure 8e. In the present document, the elastic elements 57 'can be formed of a compressible elastic material, such as latex or polyester and arranged to be compressed between the springs when the mattress is contracted and thereby provide a force to expand the mattress again when the force contraction is removed. In the illustrative example of Figure 8e, the compressible elastic material is disposed between adjacent springs within the same filament / row of the mattress. However, in addition or alternatively, the compressible elastic material can be disposed between adjacent springs within neighboring filaments / rows, that is, disposed between adjacent filaments / rows, rather than aligned with the filaments / rows.
[0087] Additionally, other types of elements can also be used to bring the mattress into an expanded and / or contracted state. For example, inflatable tubes 57 '', pads or the like can be arranged between the springs, as shown in Figure 8f. By inflating tubes 57 ’’, the mattress will be brought to an expanded state and deflating the tubes and evacuating their air, the mattress will be brought to a contracted state. In this way, the pneumatic principle and such inflatable elements can be used to provide the mattress to resume a contracted and / or expanded state when an external force is decreased. However, it can also be used to replace other arrangements for moving the mattress from a contracted state to an expanded state and vice versa and thereby be used as a single means to effect such a state transition.
[0088] In the illustrative example of Figure 8f, the inflatable elements extend in a direction perpendicular to the filaments / rows of the mattress and are arranged between adjacent springs within the same filament / row. However, in addition or alternatively, the inflatable elements can extend in a direction parallel to the filaments / rows, so that the inflatable elements are arranged between adjacent springs within neighboring filaments, that is, arranged between adjacent filaments / rows.
[0089] In the modalities discussed above, the support layer was arranged at the end of the foot of the bed arrangement. In this area, there is usually no need for firmness adjustments. Additionally, in a bed, this part of the mattress arrangement is often used for sitting and the increased stability provided by the support layer improves sitting comfort.
[0090] However, in addition or alternatively, the support layer can be arranged along the long sides of the bedding.
[0091] In Figures 9a to e, various arrangements of the support layer are illustrated schematically. In Figure 9a, a support layer 6 is arranged at the foot end of the bedding, as in the examples discussed above. In Figure 9b, a support layer 6 is arranged both at the end of the foot and at the head end, which in this way enables movement of the lower mattress and both ends. In Figure 9c, support layers 6 are arranged on both long sides of the bedding, which allows the lower mattress to expand and contract in the wide direction. In Figure 9d, a combination of the modalities of Figure 9b and 9c is shown, which allows the bottom mattress to expand and contract in both width and length directions. Finally, Figure 9e illustrates an embodiment in which a support layer 6 is arranged only on a long side of the bedding, which allows the opposite end of the lower mattress to be fixed.
[0092] Additionally, the mattress arrangement preferably comprises a pull or push arrangement connected to at least one movable side of the lower mattress, to provide a pulling or pushing force to bring the lower mattress into the expanded state. The pulling arrangement can be one or more strings, filaments or the like connected to one side of the lower mattress or inside the lower mattress. Such an arrangement is quite cost-effective and is particularly suitable for manual operation. The strings / filaments can, for example, be locked in a pulled position, suitable by a locking arrangement, tied together, or secured in any other way. A handle, wheel or any other type of handle can then be turned manually, which in this way rotates the screw, which results in a corresponding displacement of the element to pull or push hard.
[0093] Some modalities of such pulling arrangements will be illustrated below.
[0094] In Figure 10a, switching elements 8, for example, flexible elements, such as ropes or filaments, or more rigid elements, such as poles or the like, are shown, which are connected to the movable side 41 of the lower mattress 4, which is arranged under the support layer 6. The operating elements 8 extend inside or under the lower mattress and are accessible from the opposite side. By pulling the operating elements 8, the mattress will be contracted and the operating elements can be fixed in any suitable way to lock the mattress in the desired intermediate or contracted state. The movable side of the mattress can be connected to resilient elements (not shown), such as springs, which act to bring the mattress back to an expanded state. Alternatively or additionally, the switching elements 8 can be relatively rigid and usable instead or additionally to push the movable side away in the direction of an expanded state. In that case, the mattress may comprise elastic elements, as discussed earlier, which act to bring the lower mattress into a contracted state.
[0095] In Figure 10b, a similar arrangement is shown. In this document, the operating elements 8 'are also connected to the movable side 41 of the lower mattress, but are instead displaced from the same side and by pulling the operating elements inwards, the mattress is compressed and pulling the maneuver, the mattress is expanded.
[0096] In Figure 10c, an arrangement is illustrated with operating elements 8 ", such as ropes or filaments or the like that extend in both directions from the movable end 41 of the lower mattress 4 and are accessible from both This arrangement can be used both to pull the movable end to a contracted state, as shown in Figure 10a, and to pull the movable end back to an expanded state on the other side, in which case there may be no need for either elastic or resilient elements that act to bring the lower mattress to a contracted or expanded rest position.
[0097] In Figure 10d, an automated and illustrated layout. In this document, the movable end 41 is connected to a rigid side member 8a, which in turn is connected, by means of a displacement arm 8c, to an electric displacement arrangement, such as an electric motor, an electric pump 8b or similar.
[0098] In addition to the top and bottom mattresses 3 and 4 and the frame 5, an additional mattress or layers of liner can be provided. Such an example is schematically illustrated in Figure 11, where a top surface liner 7b is provided, an intermediate mattress or liner layer 7a is provided between the top and bottom mattresses and where sides of the liner or mattress 7c are provided around the bottom mattress. . Fewer mattress or liner layers or additional mattress or liner layers are of course also viable.
[0099] The person skilled in the art understands that the present invention is by no means limited to the preferred modalities described above. On the contrary, many modifications and variations are possible within the scope of the appended claims. For example, both the upper and lower mattresses may be of other types of mattresses than bagged spring mattresses, such as resilient elements formed by foam, rubber, helical springs, inflatable elements and the like. In addition, the lower mattress can be contracted and expanded in several directions and the support layer can be held in place in different ways. In addition, the firmness of the mattress arrangement can be controlled both manually and electrically. Such obvious variants need to be considered to be understood by the invention as defined by the appended claims.
